Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique in RTP

A modern, minimally invasive treatment for gum recession

What is gum recession?

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue gradually pulls away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots. This condition may result from periodontal disease, aging, aggressive brushing, or other factors. When the roots become exposed, teeth may become sensitive and more vulnerable to decay and damage.

Why should gum recession be treated?

Healthy gums play an important role in protecting teeth and supporting long‑term oral health. When gum recession progresses, the exposed root surfaces can increase the risk of sensitivity, root decay, and further gum damage. Treating gum recession early helps restore protection around the teeth and improves both oral health and appearance.

What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat gum recession. Unlike traditional gum grafting, this technique does not require incisions, stitches, or donor tissue. Instead, a very small pinhole opening is made in the gum tissue, allowing specialized instruments to gently loosen and reposition the existing gums so they cover the exposed tooth roots.

How is PST different from traditional gum grafting?

Traditional gum grafting often involves taking tissue from the palate or using donor tissue and suturing it into place to rebuild the gumline. While effective, grafting can involve more discomfort and longer healing times.

With the Pinhole Surgical Technique, the existing gum tissue is simply adjusted and repositioned. Because there are no incisions or sutures, patients typically experience a more comfortable procedure and a faster recovery.
